All the various height safety equipment standards around the world state that a documented inspection shall be carried out regularly by a competent person.

This is because without an effective inspection regime items of equipment with faults can remain in service, undetected, for prolonged periods of time resulting in an increased risk of harm to workers, plant and/or equipment.

In New Zealand a key document is AS/NZS 1891.4:2024 Personal equipment for working at height, Part 4: Selection, use and maintenance

AS/NZ 1891.4 stipulates that:

• All components of a fall-protection system shall be traceable to the point of purchase.

• An inspection register shall be maintained for all components of a fall-protection system.

• Components shall be inspected by a competent person.

• Maximum interval between inspections for components of a fall-protection system is 6 months for Textile Components, Harnesses, Lanyards, Poles Straps and Fall-Arrest Devices

• Note – Equipment used in harsh environments such as heat, corrosive or chemical exposure may require more frequent inspections
